What is Atom?

Atom is a computer system that allows you to be notified when new information is posted on the web site FindingSpace.org.

You can also use Atom to keep up to date with other web sites or weblogs that you visit. Atom allows you to identify the content you like and have it delivered directly to you.

How do I use it?

If you are using a PC at Dykebar Hospital you will be notified automatically on the Dykebar Intranet of new articles on FindingSpace.org.

If you are not on the Dykebar intranet, you will need a small piece of software called a ‘newsreader’. You may already have a newsreader to use RSS. Atom is similar to RSS and most readers work with both Atom and RSS. People like using readers because it allows them to catch up on all their favorite web sites and blogs at once. It’s like checking email without the SPAM.

Some browser and email applications, including Opera mail and Safari, have functionality which automatically picks up Atom feeds for you. If you use a browser or email client that integrates Atom you won’t need a reader. Check their websites for more info.

How do I get a reader?

The free newsreaders that support Atom, include: Jyte, Feedreader, RSSOwl and NewsGator. You can find a growing list of newsreaders at AtomEnabled.org.

How does the reader work?

Once you have installed and opened the newsreader, you simply add http://www.findingspace.org/atom.xml to the list of sites you want the reader to subscribe to. It’s free and won’t require any other information.

When a new article is posted on FindingSpace.org a small message will appear in the corner of the screen to let you know. You can click on the message to read the new information or you can ignore it and the message will disappear.
